Elves are light figures or also nature spirits, which originate from the Nordic mythology. In some European countries they regularly appear in fairy tales, sagas and legends. Often they are helpers and supporters of people in need. Elves are mostly female - except in the Lord of the Rings, there they also exist in the male variant - after all, in this story they are a kind of people.
In German fairy tales, it is often fairies who help children and other innocent people. Without the fairy godmother, Cinderella would never have gotten her dream prince.
The only real difference is that fairies can't fly, but they wave their wands around.
